Mad in China
A magazine by Tendance Floue

The photographers of Tendance Floue, in collaboration with the journalists Cécile Cazenave and Vincent, have made a franco-chines magazine entitled Mad in China.

At the outset there was the desire to penetrate the city, a city rumoured throughout the world to be concerned only
with renovation and the Olympic Games and to be nothing but a gigantic building site. We wanted to turn our eyes on the city and let ourselves be carried away by its movement.
It was not our intention to explain Beijing. Eleven photographers and two journalists thrown into the midst of the city, contriving to paint a shattered and purposely subjective portrait. Thirteen nomads who have decided to turn their feverish wanderings into a review, «Mad in China».

A fortnight to finish everything. It was a mad bet that tested our resistance to its limits inspired by the very energy of the city. It has been said that anything can happen in Beijing…The shock moreover was more violent than we had anticipated and our experiences urgently put to paper. They could not exist without an exchange of views with the Pekinese. Artists, poets and draughtsmen came to confront their vision with our own. We have seen Beijing ; we have written on Beijing. Extracts from writings confided by pekinese writers are only partly translated ; they reflect bits and pieces of reality, the reality of some, perceived by others. We lived Beijing intensely, even if we did not fully understand the city. This review in French and Chinese, is the result of our adventure, an attempt to span a bridge between our two cultures.
